Our Objectives

The Coalition of Black Trade Unionists UK (CBTU) are Black Trade unionists who are seeking to fulfil the dream of those Black trade unionists, both living and deceased, who have courageously and unremittingly struggled to build a movement that would bring all our strengths and varied talents to bear in the unending effort to achieve economic, political and social justice for all.

CBTU (UK) is a membership organisation that works within the framework of the trade union movement to provide a voice and vehicle for greater black and minority participation, to organise unorganised workers, actively support community groups working to improve living and working conditions in the black community and increase effective political alliances between workers and the general community.

The basic objectives of the CBTU are to:
Pursue economic justice, employment opportunities and rights at work for black workers';
  • Organise and mobilise black workers, develop and support a new generation of black trade union activists and renew our traditions of progressive black politics within the labour movement and beyond;
  • Work within the framework of the trade union movement to provide a voice and vehicle for greater black and minority participation;
  • Organise unorganized workers;
  • Actively support community groups working to improve living and working conditions in the black community; and
  • Build effective political alliances between workers and the wider community.
We pledge to work in coalition with trade unions and other allies whose mission is consistent with these objectives. CBTU membership is open to black trade unionists that hold union or National Union of Student membership or who are currently unemployed.
